handmade jewellery and photography

I have made jewellery for a number of years as a hobby but a threatened redundancy at work saw me having time off with stress and making things to help me stay calm. The threat of redundancy was lifted but I was by then hooked and had made so much jewellery I had to begin to sell some as I could only give my mother and sister so much for presents.
I enjoy working with a variety of jewellery making techniques particularly working with sheet silver and silver clay, and making things inspired by nature. If anyone asked my son he would say I was obsessed with trees and he is probably right. On one Silver course I was wandering round the garden getting small ivy leaves to draw round!
I love fossils and having learnt how to wire wrap this has also become something of an obsession and there is usually wire somewhere around which has also proved useful in all sorts of household emergencies!
As well as fossils I have always liked stones since we used to come to Cumbria for holidays and found bits of quartz by Haweswater. I not only enjoy wire wrapping gem stone cabochons but also making gemstone bead necklaces and earrings.
I go to local craft fairs to sell jewellery and also photo based cards as photography is also a hobby hence the Snaps bit of Snaps and Spirals. Most of my photographs are taken in my garden or out and about in Cumbria where I live as well as other places I visit.
Etsy seemed the next step after the craft fairs so I have opened the shop to see what happens.
I hope people like what I make. I can make bespoke items on request so feel free to ask. It is possible I don't know what I can do till I try either so ask anyway and I will let you know if it is something I can do!

As you will realise that is not a picture of me it is my very smug cat. He is a vital part of the Snaps and Spirals team, and always wants to help make things. although the fact he is very fluffy can be a problem - particularly with silver clay

Frequently asked questions
Can bespoke items be made to request

Bespoke items can be made for example -
necklaces / earrings made from specific gemstones where available.
Moulded Silver clay items - from specific shape or a generic shape - see motobike above. Silver clay items need to be quite small
Specific leaf or other shapes cut from sterling silver. These can be textured and shaped as required.
To request an individual bespoke piece please get in touch to discuss your needs and I will let you know if what you want is possible and discuss probable time frame and cost.
Silver items weighing over 7.78grm will require hallmarking which will add a delay and a cost to the project.

Will Silver items tarnish?

The short answer is ‘yes’ but different types of silver tarnishes at different rates and you can reduce the chances of silver tarnishing by how you look after it. You can also remove the tarnishing if it does happen.
Fine silver (Hallmarked 999) tends to tarnish considerably slower than sterling silver (hallmarked 925). This is because the amount of copper in sterling silver is greater than that in fine silver.
Snaps and Spirals jewellery which is made from silver clay is fine silver but generally the chains are sterling silver as this is stronger and so more suitable for chains. Because of this in the case of silver clay based jewellery the chain may show more of a tendency to tarnish than the pendant.

How do I prevent my jewellery tarnishing?

To reduce the tendency to tarnish keep your silver dry. The chemicals in creams and perfumes can also cause silver to tarnish so put these on first and let them dry before you put your jewellery on.
Do not wear your jewellery in the bath, the sea etc. If it does get wet make sure you dry it thoroughly.
Store your jewellery out of the air – preferably in air tight separate plastic bags to prevent scratching. Anti- tarnish plastic bags are available but an ordinary plastic bag or box will help. Silica gell packets such as come with handbags etc will also help keep the silver dry. Snaps and Spirals jewellery is provided in a gift box or bag for presentation purposes but it is best not kept long term in the box or bag.

How do I clean my jewellery if it has become tarnished or dirty?

If your jewellery does become tarnished or dirty –cleaning with a soft cloth can help – use different parts of the cloth to prevent spreading any dirt or tarnish. Silver cloths are available which are penetrated with a small amount of cleaner.
There are ‘recipes’ for natural silver cleaners readily available on the internet.
Some jewellers will offer a cleaning / polishing service.

I like the piece of jewellery but not the chain, is i possible to change this?

It is possible to change the chain on most pieces - get in touch and ask if this is the case with the jewellery you like. The style and length of chain is normally possible to change. There may be an extra charge.

It is usually possible to change the clasp to a different type or size. Please get in touch and explain what you need. There may be an extra charge for some types or sizes of clasp
