The Morning Dew print hanging out on a phone case (naming products is the best!)
The Sweet As Can Be Story
The name Sweet As Can Be was actually partially influenced by the lyrics of a Peter Gabriel song called 'Sledgehammer'! Plus, I also have a pretty funky surname to make the most of. (Thanks Dad!)
I studied Graphic Design and developed a pretty classic and minimalist style (I loove white space), but in my spare time I found myself playing around with colours, textures and patterns, and I began to create these incredibly vibrant and otherworldly prints.
I remember the moment when I first realised, truly, just how much I enjoyed creating these designs (I was sat at College, pattern creating away through a lunch break!). I love creating graphics; logos, infographics, you name it; But there is something just so special about designing a print and creating a physical product that you can hold.
The first group of 'products' I ever designed were phone cases, and I remember the process of ordering through a printing company and receiving them in the post like it was yesterday, it was so surreal to hold something in my hands that I had designed. It was such a simple item, but boy, one of those cases didn't leave my phone until I upgraded the phone itself a year or so later! From that moment on, from receiving those cases, I wanted to create bright and colourful things that made me happy, and which I hoped in turn, others would feel the same about.
I always use natural objects to gain inspiration for my patterns; think flowers, seashells, flora, fire, fauna and dreamy landscapes. I think this stems from the way I like to notice things out in nature, like the way trees filter sunlight or the dew drops on grass, I think it all winds its way in to my patterns. That attention to detail, to nature... sighh.. so dreamy.
