The Beady Gecko, Beady Mogs, Beady Dogs and Me

For years I dabbled making things for myself, I love vibrant, bright colours and I love pairing things together that might otherwise not seem to 'match', I have eclectic tastes, much to the disappointment of our girls, and I love geckos. The first pair of earrings I made for myself were silver geckos with purple beads - they're still hanging on my rack here, when we needed a company name, it seemed perfectly logical to us for me to put together two things that I really liked.

And so, in a dull moment, eight summers ago, The Beady Gecko came into being. Most of my inspiration comes from nature and the world around us, I love playing with colour, seeing a picture and making something different and permanent from it, capturing it using glass beads and charms. Most of my ideas come to me when I'm out and about, playing on beaches or walking through leaves, and this is why most of my work captures nature at its brightest, and the hidden stuff you might not usually see or think to look for.

I work with glass beads because they give a clarity and depth of colour, lucite (frosted acrylic) leaves and flowers, with metal alloy or enamelled charms to add interest and detail. I like to use a selection of metal finishes, though my favourites, and the ones you'll see most often are copper and silver plated finishes. I use plated finishes as they keep my costs affordable and reasonable, where I can, I offer an upgrade to sterling silver.

I love working with semi precious stones, I love the associations they have and the benefits they are believed to bring, I love the colour and variety that they have and that no two things I ever make will be exactly the same. I've recently completed my Reiki one training, and I'm keen to build on this and bring it into my work.

If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram, you'll know The Beady Gecko lives in Gecko Villa (which is a Victorian terrace in Mossley Hill, Liverpool), life here is never dull, and I am never lonely. There's me (Maria), married to Ian (aka Pontious) and our girls (also known as the younger Geckos).

Gecko Villa is also home to the Beady Mogs and Beady Dogs. There's four Mogs, all are adept at chasing beads and picking seed beads up with their paws. Beady Dog is a scrumptious black Labrador and Beady Pup is a rather handsome Goldador - they are much given to early morning walks and watching the sun rise with me (we especially like walking in the rain).

So now you know all about everyone else, you'll need to know that I was born in Liverpool, left in the mid 80's to study Marketing (well, Business and Finance too) at College, and came back in the early 1990's with Pontious. We weren't staying long, but 30 years later, seem to have settled pretty well. I have worked in some pretty interesting jobs over the years, including the music industry, and for a local environmental charity. I am happiest when I am surrounded by the residents of Gecko Villa and my beads or walking barefoot on a beach. Or skipping in the leaves, annoying my girls. My one burning ambition is to meet the Art teacher who told me I was no good at Art.

Shop policies

Last updated on 06 November, 2020
My jewellery and accessories are made to the highest standards (if I'm not happy with them, they don't find their way to you), but due to the very nature of them being handcrafted, will all be different and none of them uniform. It is also more fragile than mass produced jewellery, and glass beads can shatter if dropped on a hard surface.

Each item you buy from my shop will be accompanied by a care guide.

I use good, high quality materials, and will tell you in the item description what they are. Unless specified otherwise, my bracelets/bag charms and key guardians are on gold or silver plated chain and the metal alloy charms that I use is lead/nickel safe. Any findings used are gold and silver plated too, though a sterling silver option is available for ear wires. All ear wires are sourced from a reputable, UK based supplier. Tiger tail, which is used in some semi precious stone bracelets is made from plastic coated stainless steel.

Approximate sizes are given on our descriptions, please note our jewellery/accessories are not intended for use youngsters over 14 years of age.

None of my treasures are suitable for children under 3 years of age due to small parts and functional sharp points.

Frequently asked questions
Ordering advice/Postage - Covid19 and Coronavirus (advice as at Dec 2020)

The Beady Gecko will be remaining open for orders - I am lucky to be working from home; my order processing times will be clearly indicated so you know they are accurate, and I'll send you an email to let you know when your order has been despatched. Please do note, that delivery within the UK is taking a longer due to any unavoidable delays within the postal service. If anyone in our house/family becomes ill or has a positive test result, then your order will be cancelled and refunded in full immediately. Please check Christmas delivery dates below.

I am very happy to include a gift message with your order - this will be printed and included with your order. Gift wrapping is available for special occasions.

Gift wrapping and packaging

My orders are carefully packaged in a pretty printed paper bag, and contain a care sheet. They are wrapped, where appropriate, in plain tissue paper with a paper sticker. I am very happy to include a printed, personalised message for you with any order you send. This is free of charge and standard for all orders. No prices are marked on your items, so they are perfect to give as they are.

I offer a gift wrapping service at an additional charge - your order can be mailed in a tissue lined, letterbox sized postal box. This will be wrapped carefully in good quality wrapping paper, with a matching ribbon and gift tag, your message included and then posted to you or your chosen recipient, in a plain, environmentally friendly package.

Custom and personalised orders

I am very happy to include a gift message with your order, please see individual listings for more information on this. I'm sorry I'm not able to include symbols, emoji's and emoticons as part of your message as they don't print.

Rude or offensive messages will not be included, they will be replaced with a standard sheet saying 'a gift for you - enjoy' with the senders name at the bottom. If this applies to your order, then I will email you to advise.

Christmas Order Dates 2020

My last order dates for guaranteed despatch for Christmas 2020 have now passed, and while I am happy to continue to process orders, sadly I cannot guarantee their delivery in time for Christmas. Orders will be processed and posted as soon as possible, and posted to you before the Royal Mail final posting dates, at your chosen rate of postage. At this point, I strongly recommend adding Tracking at the checkout.

Sadly once your order has left me, and unless it is tracked, I have no way of knowing how long it will take to reach you, as increased mail volumes are resulting in seasonal delays in these uncertain times, this is out of my control, and very much dependant on regional variations.
