Here’s a behind the scenes picture of where you can usually find me - in the sewing corner of my studio. I’m finishing some puffin purses on my Bernina sewing machine. My furry assistant Morris never misses a photo opportunity!
The weather is gorgeous here in Paisley at the moment, so I’ve seized the opportunity to do some outdoor sewing in my garden!
Here’s a WIP shot of lots of West Highland Terriers in production. They’ve all been hand drawn, cut from felt and are ready for me to add free motion embroidery. Once the details have been stitched they’ll become glasses cases and mobile phone cases.

About

The Canny Squirrel - how it all began

I was born in Gateshead in the North-East of England and moved to Glasgow in 2004 to work as a graphic designer at a newspaper. During this time, my passion for material, patterns and sewing gradually developed over the years and whilst doing a textile design evening course I stumbled across a free machine embroidery technique which suddenly bombarded me with inspiration for sewing projects. My partner's sister was turning 40 and I decided to make her a highland cow cushion using the free machine embroidery technique I had learned (she had joked about wanting a real Highland Cow but this was not in the budget!).

That was my eureka moment and after lots of practice and sewing hours I decided to quit my job in August 2013 to concentrate on developing my textiles business.

Quality and craftsmanship is key to my ethos, which is why I decided to use Harris Tweed to make my products - it is the only fabric to be governed by its own Act of Parliament and is handwoven at the home of the weaver in the Outer Hebrides. The colours used in the cloth beautifully mirror shades found in nature and provide the perfect backdrop for my animals. The free motion embroidery technique I use for my animals is perfect for creating intricate hair and feather detail, there are no programs involved, it is all done by eye so each design is unique

Customers are able to request bespoke orders featuring any animal or even their pet on any of my products.

Thanks for reading! Katherine

You might be finding it hard to visualise this open-air event, in the tree-filled grounds of a church at the western end of Princes Street - Edinburgh's main shopping street. We're confident you won't find anything quite like this anywhere else in the world. The makers, designers and artists are selling only what they themselves have produced. Standards are high and there's plenty of originality and diversity on display. From 100 to 120 exhibitors every day with new faces on Mondays. ADMISSION is FREE, so you can visit as often as you like - and there's a cafe on site, with indoor and outdoor seating, for food and refreshments.
