Michael had worked all his life in the mining and heavy engineering industry but he took to being a full time chandler like a duck to water. Way back in 2014 he started experimenting with wax melts and then progressed onto candles as well. When friends and family started asking him to make candles and melts for them we decided to start a small business making and selling them.

Between us we decided that the business ethos would be to produce a well made environmentally friendly wax candle for a very fair price in simple packaging. We wanted to get rid of the idea that only the expensive candles were any good. Everything is tested by us, it can be very time consuming but we are proud of our products so it is worth it. We are fully compliant with the legal requirements for making and selling candles, our products are traceable and labelled as the law states they should be. We only use supplies that have been specifically made for candles and that includes our containers. All the fragrance oils we use are fully compliant with IFRA and RIFM regulations. In accordance with our environmental ethos the fragrance oils are cruelty free, suitable for vegans/vegetarians and paraben free. We continue to experiment and add to our range but one thing you can be sure of - any new product will have been tested, tested and tested.

We live and work in Branxton, Northumberland. For the history buffs, this is where the Battle of Flodden took place, which is why our business is named The Flodden Candle Company.

The battle was the largest ever to take place between Scotland and England and had a huge impact on Scotland as their king, James IV along with many Scottish nobles, were killed. In fact it is said that there was not an aristocratic family in Scotland that did not lose someone in the battle. It was without doubt a violent battle as there were reputedly 14,000 killed. The battle is said to be the last great medieval battle in the British Isles and the last one in which the longbow played a decisive role. It is well worth reading about the battle.
