5 out of 5 starsAbsolutely stunning! Working with Kes is such an easy and wonderful process. She knows everything about design and creating beautiful art that all I have to do is tell her a little bit about what I want and she automatically has a perfect idea about the design! She sent me photos of images to create the perfect egg, sparing no detail. And it is so gorgeous! Right down to the beautiful egg box it arrived in! Thank you! I can’t wait to purchase again 😄
About TheKestrelAndTheSea
-
I'm trying to organise my workspace but I'm a hoarder of wonderful things, which take up a lot of space!
-
I always try to photograph my creations outdoors, if the weather's fine.
-
I like to apply my art to things like Christmas ornaments, jewellery, and furniture.
-
One day I'd like to illustrate children's books...

When I was a child, my mother taught me to paint empty eggshells, which we hung from branches of forsythia & pussywillow
All about me and my business!
I studied Physics at University but that was for practical reasons - I needed to study a serious subject that would lead to a 'real' job, as I was a single parent. But art was always my first love, and I am so excited at finally having the chance to pursue it seriously.
I live in Brighton (a fabulous place on the south coast of England), but while I build up my Etsy business, I still have a geeky day job, analysing errors in financial software! So I mostly create small-scale artworks; things I can pop into my bag, and work on during my lunch-hour or on the train.
I try not to get too stuck in an artistic rut - most of things I make are 'one offs', and I am always looking for new challenges. So if you need something arty created, but can't see anything similar in my shop - don't worry, just send me a message, and I will let you know if I can help.
In May 2014, my work was featured on Glamour magazine's 'Most Wanted' page. They said:
"The Kestrel and the Sea specialises in original art, unique hand-painted gifts and custom portraits by Brighton-based artist Kes Samuelson. Her inspirations are drawn from nature; by painting animals and birds onto special trinkets and treasures of all kinds, she can transform anything into a beautiful, bespoke gift!"
Every year I select different charities to support; in 2013 I raised more than £500 for the homeless charity St Mungo's by painting wooden hearts and donating all the proceeds from them. Since then, I've created lots of small artworks to benefit a local foodbank, a Children's hospice, a homeless centre, and now to fund activities for young carers aged 8 to 12. Check out the 'Charity' sections of my shop to see what's currently available!
