About

TVV in a Nutshell

The Accessories Side - The Velvet Village started as more of a hobby back in 2009. Having studied fashion design at college and university, and previously having my own clothing label I had access to a lot of haberdashery and fabrics. At that time i happened to be working part-time in a gorgeous accessories boutique in Buxton, Derbyshire. Part of that business was 'hat hire', so i was handling all these beautiful hats and fascinators, studying the craftsmanship and realised 'I could make this!'. It was as simple as that! I woke up one day with a 'PING!' light bulb moment, with the idea of a giant oversized hair bow. I started selling them on ebay, just making them out of whatever leftover fabrics i had and they sold like hot cakes. Even in those early days i had a lot of returning customers putting in request orders and it grew from there, i moved to a more appreciative platform (Hiiii Etsy), widened my range of accessories incorporating my love of vintage finds, sourcing unusual pieces and upcycling old jewellery to give them a new lease of life as something different. I started collaborating with exciting models, photographers and stylists all over the world and suddenly The Velvet Village was being requested for magazine editorials, music videos and styling celebrities. To this day, even after all these years, my favourite part of 'TVV' is seeing something i've made with my own hands being worn and enjoyed by somebody else. Still.

The Arty Side - With my history being in fashion design, i was automatically drawn to illustration to show my clothing collections. However, after university i felt i had nothing left to design so i turned my attention to painting on canvas. I've always been passionate about beautiful faces and the female figure. But a few years ago i experienced my first ever 'painters block'. Suddenly i was no longer inspired by a gorgeous face or fabulous garments and i found a whole new love for patterns and prints. I started experimenting with digital painting and abstracts which was a fun time for me. With the occasional family portrait commission coming in i was forced to paint the the things i'd lost interest in and i'm happy to say, in doing so, found my passion for faces again. I don't yet feel i've arrived at 'my style'. Instead i range in many styles, from the digital abstracts to delicate watercolours, from simple ink illustrations to fine oil painting portraits. There's no one style i favor over another, i love it all so much and i'm constantly evolving. I'm excited to push 'the arty side of The Velvet Village.
