Keeping an old tradition alive

My name is Carol and I specialise in intricately handcrafted corn dollies and other wheat woven items to celebrate the passing of the year, bestow blessings on family and home, or to mark special events such as weddings and anniversaries. I research traditional and contemporary designs from around the world so that I can produce pieces with stories to tell and which, for many people, hold sentimental and spiritual values. I pride myself in providing a quality service with a rapid turnaround time and work closely with my clients to produce custom and bulk orders at reasonable prices.

I have practised this craft for several years and am the proud holder of the Craftsman’s Award from the Guild of Strawcraftsmen. I get great satisfaction from knowing that, from my tiny garden workshop, I am helping to preserve this ancient rural craft.

How did I get into this? Well, it was music that brought this all about when I was invited to join a medieval band called Rough Musicke as their hurdy gurdy player. It quickly became apparent that my fellow musicians had other strings to their bow, so to speak, and very soon after joining I found myself also demonstrating my straw weaving to the crowds at historical re-enactment events. The enthusiasm and interest shown in my work generated so many enquiries about how people might get in touch with me that I finally took the plunge and opened my etsy shop in 2016.

Thank you for taking the time to learn a little about my business. Please browse through my shop – the range is constantly changing - and feel free to contact me to discuss your customised order.

Frequently asked questions
I need my order urgently. How quickly will it arrive?

Most of my orders are despatched within 24 hours and are delivered by courier, usually in 2-4 days. I can send items first class but this will incur an additional charge. Please contact me to discuss this.

Will my custom order take much longer than stock items?

Not usually. I try to keep a good stock of corn dollies and have a wide variety of trims on hand so that custom orders are often sent out within 24-36 hours. If, however, you are ordering a large number of items, for example, for a wedding, you may need to plan ahead a little as obviously it will take me a while!

How long do corn dollies last?

Good question! Kept in a dry environment they will, quite literally, last for years. A little museum near me has a display of items made over forty years ago.

Aren't corn dollies too fragile to ship?

Once dried corn dollies are reasonably resilient considering that they are made from straw. However, I pack items very carefully so that they arrive in good condition.
