About

Made in the Midlands

From my workshop in Birmingham’s historic Jewellery Quarter, I create delicate, unusual designs for people who want eye-catching jewellery that doesn’t break the bank or their workplace dress code…

As a historian working out of the Jewellery Quarter, I take much of my inspiration from historic architecture and design, but also from found objects and 21st century minimalism. I'm always focusing on the possibilities of shape and texture within delicate jewellery pieces; I wants to prove that designs don’t have to be large to be statement pieces! Each item created is a reflection of both past and present; a vintage button could inspire a modern necklace, whilst new techniques with precious metal clay might prompt the creation of a replica Tudor coin charm. From weddings to workwear and simple to statement, there's a design in our collection to suit everyone.

At Tiding of Magpies, we believe that jewellery is an important means of self-expression, so want to create staple pieces that make people feel even more like themselves every time they wear them. This is why I love nothing more than having the chance to create custom designs for my clients. If you have an idea for a piece, why not drop me a conversation, and we'll get started making your perfect, bespoke design.

And as for the name of my store? Well, although recent research suggests magpies may not be as fond of collecting shiny objects as we all thought, there’s no doubt that we humans are, and that’s where Tiding of Magpies comes in...

Frequently asked questions
Fitting your hoop earrings

Our hoops' hook and eye style closures are made for security, so that they are wearable every day without risking the charms getting lost. The easiest way to release the clasp for insertion of the earring is:

• Gently pop the looped end upwards over the straighter end.

• Push or pull the ends away from each other in a PARALLEL motion (not apart horizontally) to create space for the hoop to fit over the earlobe.

• Push the straight end back the opposite way and under the loop to close the hoop.

Fitting your hoops pt. 2: shaping

Each Tiding of Magpies hoop is made from 0.8mm (20 gauge) wire, which is delicate and flexible. They say ears are as distinct as fingerprints, and with that in mind I've designed these hoops to be flexible so you can adjust and mould them to your own ear.

They hold their shape but can equally be bent and then reshaped for comfort if needs be. Simply find an appropriately sized pen or pencil, slide the hoops one at a time onto the end of the pen/pencil, then press gently down and around to work out any kinks where you have bent the metal.

What is gold fill?

14 carat gold and rose gold fill is a much more durable alternative to gold plating, whilst being more affordable than pure gold and rose gold, allowing me to offer you the most beautiful designs with the best value for money.

Unlike with plating, gold filling involves a layer of gold being chemically bonded to the layer of non-precious metals underneath. This means that gold fill will not rub off and wear, or turn your skin green! In plating, the layer of gold is simply placed over the top of the lower metal, meaning it damages much more easily with wear, contact with water, etc.

Care instructions

Silver:
Wash with warm water and gentle hand soap. For heavily tarnished silver, use a silver polishing cloth or silver dip (widely available). Please be aware that silver polish will have an effect on oxidised pieces, so make sure only to polish the pale silver areas, not the black ones, to maintain the oxidised effect.

Gold fill:
With time, very frequent wear or contact with perfumes and other toiletries, gold fill metal may become duller. Simply wash your gold fill pieces with warm water and some gentle hand soap. Try to avoid direct contact with perfumes, antiperspirants, etc. to maintain a shiny finish.

9ct gold:
Wash with warm water and gentle hand soap. For very dull gold, use a gold polishing cloth or jewellery dip.

Custom and personalised orders

I happily accept custom orders. If you would like a small adjustment to an existing item, such as an unlisted chain length or slight size variation, please send me a conversation and I'll be happy to accommodate your requests wherever possible.

If you would like a more extensive change to a design (e.g. different stones/shapes) or a completely original design of your own, please purchase this custom order listing - https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/506286006

This allows me to account for the time and work involved in designing a custom piece and sourcing materials, and will be removed from the final cost of your custom piece if you decide to commission it.

Custom and personalised orders - intellectual property

All Tiding of Magpies designs remain my intellectual property and I reserve the right to remake and sell any custom order. By purchasing my custom jewellery design listing (https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/506286006) the customer agrees not to use the resulting designs for anything other than personal use.

Shipping

All pieces are handmade to order and will be dispatched in 3-5 business days. Please check my shop announcements to see any updates in dispatch and processing times, particularly around busy holidays such as Christmas/Mothers' Day.

UK orders will be sent using Royal Mail Second Class Signed For and international orders will be sent using Royal Mail International Tracked. UK shipping upgrades are available at checkout; unfortunately I am unable to offer international shipping upgrades at this time.

Please allow the specified shipping times (see policies) following your dispatch notification before requesting an update on your item, as postal service efficiency can vary, and the shipping estimates are based on Royal Mail guidelines.

Gift wrapping and packaging

All Tiding of Magpies products come beautifully packaged in embossed boxes, perfect for gifting - or for treating yourself! Due to the smartness of the boxes, we do not currently offer any additional gift wrapping options.

Orders are shipped in large letter-sized padded envelopes, which allows me to offer you lower shipping costs than smaller, bulkier packaging, which would not fit the Royal Mail's large letter dimensions.
