An introverted kitchen witch

This all began with the search for a good, effective natural deodorant.

You see, the thing was, I couldn't find one that worked. There were some which smelt nice but didn't do much, the ones which made my skin itch uncontrollably and one which, rather inexplicably, smelt of bubblegum.

I was determined to find a natural alternative though and, following my quiet mantra 'nature always provides', I set about the task of researching and making my own. A few trial batches and some tinkering later and I had what I had always hoped to find - a simple, easy-to-apply, natural, EFFECTIVE deodorant.

The story of Totterdown Apothecary is a little longer than that though! Being an introverted sort and a quiet, mouse-like kitchen witch, I made the deodorant as and when I needed it and otherwise went about my business. For years! It was only very recently when a friend was going through the same frustration that I decided to pipe up. I gave her a jar of deodorant cream and she loved it. Not only that but she practically insisted that I had to start selling it!

By this time I had been steeping oils and making other skincare for myself in the dead of night and under a full moon (well, maybe not always, but it certainly paints my kitchen in a more romantic light) so I had plenty of tested products and ideas to play with and Totterdown Apothecary (named for the area of Bristol I live in) came into being.

I now hope to take my knowledge of herbs and their impact on the body a little deeper and create creams, lotions, oils, tinctures and salves to gently cure, heal and restore. Maybe one day I'll learn soap-making. I'd like that.

I am a maker of many things but all have a common core running through them - I am most satisfied when working with the Earth, rather than contrary to it. For this reason I only use organic, ethically-sourced ingredients for my skincare products.
