Trashy Bags Africa is a social enterprise company upcycling discarded drinking water sachets that litter the streets of Accra, Ghana’s capital city, into eco-friendly bags.
Over 1 million tonnes of plastic packaging waste is produced in Ghana annually leading to pollution of streets, beaches and sewage systems. Plastic sachets, in particular, have become a big problem with a lack of recycling initiatives and waste management infrastructure.
Each month we collect over 200,000 plastic water sachets that are cleaned and upcycled by our Trashy Bags team creating fashionable, iconic and useable products. And, by giving waste a value, this promotes a "Trade Not Aid" approach.
With up to 70 sachets being used for each bag and any waste left over from the process being recycled into plastic pellets, Trashy Bags Africa is leading the way in sustainable development in Africa, having collected and recycled over 30 million sachets since we started.
Trashy Bags Africa now employs over 30 people in the factory alone, creating local employment with a skill and is seen as a pioneer and leader in the challenge of alternative recycling of plastic waste.
