About UllapoolBoxCreations

Sales 2,728
On Etsy since 2015

Hi I'm Alan Macritchie. I'm a self-taught wood crafter using the best materials to create quality pieces.

It all started when i moved to Ullapool in the West Coast of Scotland back in 2009. It is a beautiful little village situated in a glacial valley on the banks of Loch Broom. I wanted to start my own business but had no idea what direction to take. Ullapool has many gift shops, many sold generic "Scottish" souvenirs imported by the pallet load from Thailand. This got me thinking and a chance encounter with the owner of a local wood supplier that had been responsibly sourcing local and tropical hardwoods for decades sealed the deal. I taught myself traditional woodcrafting through Google and Youtube and found my style developing. I do not own or use a lathe and work each and every piece with my own two hands. I love to use the live-edge on wood wherever possible and let the grain and natural shape dictate form. I moved back to Inverness in 2014 to a larger workshop which enabled me to make larger pieces such as coffee tables. I have now worked over sixty five different types of hardwood and am still as enthusiastic as when i first began but have kept the same business model, quality at affordable prices.
It is over 7 years now that i have been working wood. I have learnt a huge amount but fully realise that i have ten times more to learn in my craft and that this will take a lifetime. As i develop my style, i take the skills i have learnt to date and keep pushing to make even more interesting and beautiful pieces that are of the absolute highest quality. I love what I do and I’m driven to see how far I can develop my craft. I can’t thank my customers enough for letting me live out my dream, a huge thank you to each and every one of you for your continued support.

Frequently asked questions
Care instructions

With use my finish will eventually ware. For wood pieces simply apply a good quality wax paste or an oil such as Danish oil. For antler and antler/wood pieces apply a mineral oil. For Damascus Steel Sgian Dubhs, to store, apply any clear oil and store out of the sheath.

Custom and personalised orders

I am happy to use Pyrography (wood burning) to add a name or small personal message to a piece. I usually do this as a no cost option.
I now offer a wood capping service for all Natural Antler Sgian Dubhs/Brews currently listed on my shop. For £6 I will add an end cap of either Snakewood, Blackwood, Burr Wych Elm heartwood or sapwood. Please see the wood cap customisation listing.

Care instructions

In general, keep my pieces out of direct sunlight and away from any major heat source and sources of damp. If you follow these instructions then my pieces will last and be cherished for many lifetimes.

Multiple purchases - shipping charges

For multiple purchases i only ever charge the exact shipping charged by the Post Office. I will always combine shipping when ordering multiple items so the shipping calculated by the Post Office will be what you are actually charged. Immediately after posting your order i will refund your shipping overages.

Custom and personalised orders

Wedding gifts for the Groom and male party - if your are looking for special wedding gifts for the male party then my Sgian Dubhs, Sgian Brews and Kilt Pins could fit that bill perfectly. They are beautiful, unique and gifts that will be remembered and treasured for generations to come.

Item pictured / Do you have another one?

Just to clarify, the item pictured in each listing is the actual item that will be received unless otherwise stated. The Natural Antler handles are unique so only one of each of them but I may have overstock made in other designs, please just ask.

99.9% of orders are shipped the next day or sometimes even the same day. For UK orders I use Royal Mail 1st class recorded. For International orders I usually use Royal Mail International Tracked and Signed service, this is a fast, reliable service that tries to deliver in 7-10 days. Unfortunately, for some unknown reason, my Sgian Dubhs are not permitted into Canada by Canadian Customs so can not complete orders to this country, a full refund will be given if ordered.

Sharpening Sgian Dubhs

My Stainless Steel Sgian Dubh blades are made from a high quality Stainless Steel. They come supplied with a blunt edge but can be sharpened and will hold a keen edge. I can sharpen these blades for a small fee, please contact me to discuss your requirements.
My Damascus blades already have a good profile so I am happy to sharpen these free of charge as they require very little honing, please contact me with your requirements.

Gift wrapping and packaging

I do not gift wrap items but package them very well. If items are marked as gift when purchasing I am happy to include a hand written message to your recipient on one of my cards. Please put the details of your message on the buying notes when purchasing. If your item is for someone else or you just want them included, I am happy to put the details of the item onto headed paper, please just ask for this when ordering, alternatively I can send you the details on a PDF.

Sgian Dubh colour scheme

If you would like a specific colour scheme e.g. black and red, please contact me to discuss your requirements, I have many different wood species to choose from.
