We love all things unique and beautiful

I started Unique Designs by Tina over 4 years ago,
It started as just a hobby making and selling hair accessories and wedding favours from our farm in St Newlyn East, Cornwall.
My mum bought the shop we are in now in the early winter of 2013
She bought it to run her own business and live above the shop premises.
Like most farmers who own a livestock trailer and plenty of storage you end up with various household items from family members on the move.
It was in February 2013 when we made the delivery of the household items to 85 Fore Street in Bodmin.
My husband Fred and I had the usual tour you get when someone moves in to a new property, this is when I made the crazy decision to ask my mum what was she going to do with this huge building. Her reply was I'm not sure !
To which I replied can I give the shop a go....😁
Don't ask me where it came from I just had this feeling that I had to give my hobby a go on the high street and see where it leads.
We were calving 200 cows at the time ☺️
So, inbetween calving and decorating the shop,we created Unique Designs by Tina.
We opened the doors in early April 2013.
To start with we had my hair accessories, wedding favours and a few wedding gift ideas to fill the shop. When I look back now it was a huge shop with very little in it. So we came up with the idea of setting up wedding tables with chair covers and a table centre to give people the idea and feel of a wedding accessories shop. Once again we asked my mum if we could take over the large back room to create the showroom. Of course she said YES !!!
It was very quiet to begin with, not many people came in and the few that did didn't buy much, I would spend my days at the shop and Fred would be working on the farm. I started to think I'd made a big mistake. But gradually through the summer months word got around of the new shop selling & hiring wedding accessories.
Then it happened one Wednesday in July, a Dad and daughter came into the shop intrigued by our shop window. They were actually on their way to the local florist just up the road from us to order wedding flowers for his daughters upcoming wedding in August. We got talking about what they were after and once again out of my mouth came I can do them for you if you like 😁....
They really liked my hair accessories and artificial flower displays I had made for our table centres. So they agreed and I had my first order of bouquets and chair covers 😳 .....
I went home that afternoon to tell my husband the news.....I was so happy that someone had enough confidence in what they saw at the shop to give me a go.
That was the first of 7 weddings that year... And 13 bookings for 2014,
My husband and I worked together on both the farm and my new venture throughout the summer. We attended as many wedding fairs as we could to get ourselves known. It gradually got quiet again in October, no one came in and in November panic struck again. The Rates and Rent on the shop started to hit home and what was coming in didn't cover them. December was even worse, no one came into the shop at all. So we shut shop for christmas and tried to put Unique Design to the back of our minds. We were so worried and didn't realise, being novices at the wedding thing, no one concentrates on their wedding in the lead up to christmas 😳 but we didn't know that and thought we'd sunk so much money into a failing dream.
On January 7th 2014 we opened our doors again not expecting much trade...
Boy were we wrong 😆 that day 12 different couples came flooding through our door wanting to hire various wedding items from us as they had seen us at a wedding fair in the summer and wanted to get Christmas out the way before concentrating on their 2014 wedding.
That year our 13 bookings turned into 73 weddings with 40+ booked for 2015.
We picked up a large hotel in this year who wanted us to be in their chair cover package and of course that made our wedding bookings go up. Up until now it had been me, my husband, my mum and occasionally my eldest son Luke on sites dressing the weddings. Of course Inbetween times squeezing our other life of farming into a decreasing time scale in the day.
It was because of this my husband and I made the very hard decision to quit our farm tenancy in June. We sold our cows in December 2015 and moved to Bodmin in the February 2016 to be closer to our new business.
Once again we went to as many wedding fairs as we could to get ourselves known. Our stock levels grew and we offered a wider range of hired items.
My husband Fred, is very good with the woodwork so took his hand to making all the furniture we now use in our shop.
Which is where our Alternative Guestbooks have come from. A bride had asked if we could make her one and like me he just said yes. We have been selling them from our shop in Bodmin all summer and felt it was time to let people see them and hopefully want them in their own home. So today the 5th December we opened our ❤️ NEW ETSY SHOP ❤️
