WHB Miniatures :Birth & Beyond
Our move from passive observer. Into active participation. Came after we visited our first Miniatura show in 2011. Having seen the variety of items that were on offer, It inspired us to have a go ourselves. Wendy having a Degree in Textile Design and a passion for needle work decided to create a hand stitched carpet. Our first carpet was Wendy’s interpretation of an 18th century style. After receiving some positive feedback on her first few designs. Wendy decided to expand her range and to continue to develop her style. Moving forward Wendy designed a range of rugs. With patterns based on variations of shade and colour.
As our confidence grew we began making bed sets (Quilts & Pillows)and cushions. At first we were selling on ebay, but in 2014 we opened a shop on etsy and began selling to an international audience. With sales to America accounting for half our business.
We did our first dolls house miniatures fair back in 2013 which resulted in our first commission. We used to offer a service where by we would complete unfinished needle work projects. An elderly lady who made use of this service was so impressed. She commissioned us to design a carpet for a room in her dolls house.
From those first tentative steps we have expanded our range to include items for the nursery. Fire screens, soft furnishings and an ever increasing range of cushions all hand made.
Working from home space is tight so we have set up the conservatory as our work room. Although not the biggest of rooms, being cold in winter and hot in summer. The expanse of natural light, provided by the glasshouse more than makes up for these short falls.
My health problems (I suffer with FND which can be quite debilitating). And our children (2 boys aged 7 and 10) have quite an impact on any work schedule. So its a case of creating as much as possible while the boys are at school and while I’m well enough to help.
Having exhibited our work at Stafford with Doreen Jeffries in the past. We decided that the time had come to expand our horizons. Exhibiting with Miniatura at Cranmore Park in November 2015.
