HOW IT ALL BEGIN

Wastra Indonesia London was born out of my love and passion for Indonesian traditional textiles. I was born in North Sumatra, Indonesia and spent part of my childhood living in this region. I come from the Toba Batak tribe and both of my grandmothers were weavers, so I do have a very strong connection to Indonesian traditional textiles which in North Sumatra we call “ulos”.

In 2009, I started looking deeper into Indonesian traditional textiles from around the archipelago and was very concerned that these beautiful arts were slowly heading for extinction in many regions of the country. Through a small charity, I founded in 2000 (Connect Indonesia, The Charity www.connectindonesia.org), I started finding out about the weavers and I discovered that there are many skilful weavers in the country who needed support to continue weaving and to market their products globally. Since 2012, through Connect Indonesia we have managed to implement several grassroots community projects , helping to empower women weavers and batik artists and encouraging young girls to continue these traditions. Connect Indonesia is a community organisation, runs entirely by unpaid volunteers.

All the items sold here on our Etsy shop are made by weavers and batik artists from around Indonesia, and part of the proceeds from the sale of every piece will go to support grassroots projects with artisan groups all over Indonesia. Information on the project can be found in http://www.connect-indonesia.org
