    About

Hand dyed wool yarn for knitting and crochet

Hello and welcome to my hand dyed wool yarn shop. I'm Michelle mum to three lovely boys, I live in the beautiful Staffordshire Moorlands on the edge of the Peak District National Park. I have always loved to make and create and a love of crochet led to my obsession with dyeing yarn. Using hand dyed yarns adds an extra special element to your work, making it beautifully unique as no two hand dyed yarns are exactly the same. I hand dye my yarn in small batches at home in my kitchen. I use merino wool from farms that do not employ the use of the mulesing system.

The heritage of dyeing in the mill town I live in dates back to over 150 years. The river that runs through the town had the properties to make superior dyes and attracted Thomas Wardle to set up three sites along its banks, dyeing fabric and silks yarns from india and china. Wardle collaborated with William Morris, the arts and crafts designer, setting up a print works to support a new direction in the use of colour and design. Morris' influence can still be found as he designed many of the stain glass windows in the churches and buildings in leek and cheddleton. Many of the silk and fabric mills can still be seen today along with the weavers cottages as you walk through the towns streets. My inspiration is drawn from the history of this little town and the beautiful area around it, with its deep valleys, winding rivers, caves, granite outcrops and vast moorlands.
