About

An Artist Toymaker who Loves Dogs

I learned to sew as a child and toys were the first things I really enjoyed making. I took little felt rabbits to school to sell for pocket money and made families of hamsters and mice for my sister and I to play with. The cloth trade is in my family, my great-grandfather began work as a shirt cutter and later had a women's clothing business. My grandmother on the other side was descended from Flemish weavers who came to Macclesfield, and her surname was Shirt! I use vintage mother of pearl shirt buttons on my dogs now as a nod to my past.

I intended to study costume and fashion and gained an A Level in pattern cutting but my love for drawing and creating little characters and stories lead me towards illustration. I went to Camberwell School of Art in London and then on to do an MA in Children's Book Illustration in Cambridge. I now work as an illustrator and toymaker. In 2016 I was selected as a member of the British Toy Makers Guild which represents and encourages the highest standards of craftsmanship and design.

After wanting a dog for many years I now have a lovely canine studio assistant, Franki the Shetland Sheepdog. He is very helpful and is always emptying my bin and carrying little scraps of fabric all over the house!

I attend craft fairs throughout the year and you can check dates and news on my Instagram @LittleToyDogs.

Frequently asked questions

Custom and personalised orders

If you would like me to make a particular breed of dog (or animal), which is not available in the shop, you can request a custom order. CONTACT ME FIRST for a quote so I can confirm the final cost. This is not a pet portrait service as such because I will make a pattern that represents the breed in a truthful way, but it will be my creative interpretation. The crucial thing is finding a fabric that is just right. These are specialist mohair fabrics & occasionally there can be a wait for a particular cloth to be woven. I can sometimes add personal colourings or markings. Some examples of things I can personalise are colours or placings of spots, white patches, tail or no tail on docked breeds, or even numbers of legs, ears and eyes!

Care instructions

Mohair is a natural fibre. It is washable, but it is advisable to only spot clean dogs which have been fabric dyed. Dogs may be vacuumed with an upholstery attachment to remove dust. Mohair is vulnerable to clothes moths, so it is also advisable to inspect them regularly. It is possible to treat them with a moth repellent spray suitable for clothing. You can also use cedar and lavender essential oils on tissue or wooden blocks to deter pests. If they are ever damaged on their adventures we are happy to offer a toy hospital service. All dogs will be well looked after!

Gift wrapping and packaging

All dogs are wrapped in tissue paper and presented in quality kraft brown boxes with magnetic flap closures and a white grossgrain ribbon tab. These boxes are posted in a secondary corrugated cardboard postal box.

If you would prefer an anonymous, unmarked parcel please add a comment at checkout, otherwise it may carry stickers or rubber stamp decorations! I can also stamp names onto labels or boxes.

Wholesale availability

I am not taking wholesale orders at this time.
