Our story....'one man's junk is another man's treasure'

We are a new small business consisting of Ellen & Sophie - two friends and autism mums from South Yorkshire. The initial motivation for Badger's Woodland Crafts was to provide us with a creative and therapeutic outlet for our own ill health and family struggles. Our mission is to make beautiful things out of unwanted or discarded items by applying our wood, textile and design skills. We use as many recycled materials as possible in our products, including our packaging, as we hate waste and the idea of things going to waste or to landfill needlessly. We are proud of the provenance of the materials we use and will always make this clear on our listings. Using recycled materials takes more time and love than simply buying off the shelf but it also means the end results are unique. Many of our items are one off pieces inspired by a particular item we have found, so if you see it and like it, it's best to get it while you can! We love bespoke and are a new business starting out so we would really welcome any messages or personal requests so please just get in touch.

Our story

Badger's Woodland Crafts was formed in May 2019 after a trip to Makers Central at the NEC and deciding we would love to try and make more. Within 1 week we had a business name, logo, social media, spreadsheets galore and an ever-extending list and Pinterest board bursting with ideas for new makes. At one point our What'sApp accounts nearly went into spontaneous combustion with all the ideas going back and forth.

From the start we have been clear that we want to create things from existing objects and bring new love to other people's junk (I mean unwanted items). We regularly scour charity shops and freecycle (and friends and family's cupboards too when they announce a clear out!) to find materials. We have also been spotted doing slow drivebys of skips….!

Between the two of us we have a range of skills and are teaching ourselves and each other new techniques all the time, from pyrography, macrame, crochet, feltwork, woodwork and more. We often use found objects to inform what new skills we need to develop - for example we are currently learning how to cut and mould metal from an object we have acquired to make garden ornaments (watch this space for that one).

As two parents with two autistic children each, plus many other chronic health conditions of our own and within our families, we are always keen to support charities and community organisations and many of our products include a donation to specific organisations. We have also developed a small range of sensory and communication items particularly with autistic families in mind and this is an area we will be developing further.
