About Cananansolas

Sales 133
On Etsy since 2021

56 year old woman, who has found her passion, making beautifully scented wax goodies, some personalised. All decorated with her own pressed flowers.

I'm Ruth. After over 30 years as a social worker, I took early retirement, downsized out of the city to a small village in Ayrshire, where I live with my wife our two dogs, Lupin, a 7 year old cockapoo, and Tavish our 5 year old basset hound. We live in a converted estate house situated within 26 acres of countryside and I love it! The only down side is my 22 year old dreadlocked eco warrior daughter wanted to remain in the city.

I have always wanted to do something creative, but never saw myself as artistic. I decided to try my hand at candlemaking. I knew I didn't want to do it to make lots of money, but instead wanted to create candles, melts, etc, which would look and smell beautiful. I knew I wanted to decorate them and make them as unique as possible. I also wanted to turn my hand to pressing flowers and foliage. Nothing better then, than to combine the two.

My daughter is vegan and campaigns on environmental and animal rights issues, and I have been vegetarian for most of my life so having products that were environmentally friendly, free from cruelty and as natural as possible, was really important.

I also love words and the power of language to yes harm, but mostly to heal, inspire and complement our lives. This was also important for my creations. All my candles, therefore, have an ode on them to the recipient. This ode is either sentimental, humorous or inspirational and is put on a label and tied with a choice of ribbon, around the neck of each candle.

The name Language of light or Canan an solas, in Scots gaelic was in homage to my dearest friend who died in 2020. She was originally from Lewis and was a native gaelic speaker. She and I loved to discuss books and she wrote beautifully. This, and the emotions we all feel in candlelight, led me to call my wee business Language of light.

I have no aspirations of trying to grow this into a larger business. I am happy to be the sole maker and to continue to forage for flowers and foliage in the garden that my wife develops and during my walks with my darling dogs. So every candle, melt, votive and air freshener will be made and decorated by me and no one else.

This is my joy, my therapy, my place of zen, my art and every compliment I receive about my creations gives me such a thrill. I love it!

Shop members

  • Lupin the cockapoo

    Assistant

Lupin is chief starer, which she does for hours, whilst I'm creating, which means every 15 minutes I have to pat her. She is also very good at pawing me to not only give her attention but to rub her tummy. Lupin is also a great mould thief and burier

  • Tavish, the Basset Hound

    Assistant

Tavish is the "store dug". He can be found during the creating process, lying prostrate, in the middle of the kitchen. He also thinks everything is edible so will happily steal dried flowers, etc for a snack. He has a great snout so helps with scents.

Production partners

  • wax burner maker

    London, England

Frequently asked questions
Custom and personalised orders

I can make all items, apart from the sample scents bag, in colours of your choice and where possible, flowers of your choosing. I can also make items with 100% essential oils.
For candles, you choose the type and colour of ribbon that you want tied around the neck.
The ode on each candle is printed on kraft card luggage label and personalised with an ode to the recipient. You choose the ode from a selection I message to you, or you can request an ode of your own. The odes can be sentimental, humorous or inspirational. Again your choice.
As all my makes are made to order, if there is a particular scent you would like, that is not in my seasonal garden scents range, you can request this, and, dependent on oils in stock, I'm happy to customise
