Helen Kitson: Mixed Media Collage Artist

I’ve been dabbling with mixed media collage for 16 years, but only in the last couple of years has everything really come together as I’ve learned, through trial and error, what excites me about this medium.

Studying for a Master's degree in Art History helped to train my eye to really look at things - not just the obviously beautiful things - taking note of their colours, textures, patterns, and the emotions they evoke.

Discovering the work of Kurt Schwitters was a real lightbulb moment for me. His concept of 'merz art' - of finding meaningful aesthetic possibilities in the discarded and apparently useless fragments of daily life - really spoke to me.

I mostly use vintage papers (envelopes, legal documents, old books) – unwanted, time-worn things to which I try to give new meaning and context as I explore through touch, re-arrangement, and the juxtaposition of unrelated scraps of the past, the telling of new stories while listening to the echoes of old ones.

I am also a novelist and poet, with a day job as a Legal Secretary.
