Beauty and love: the craft of drawing

I started illustration for the sheer love of drawing. It is very rare for a day to go by when I don't have a pencil in my hand at some point! Illustration gives me the freedom and the opportunity to create something beautiful, or something dark, or however I may be feeling.

Starting in 2009, I studied illustration and design at university and graduated with first class honors in 2011. And from that I went on to become a freelance illustrator! Since then, I have worked for a number of clients including The Sunday Times Style magazine, House of Fraser and Fabulous Magazine

During university, I started up my Etsy store. It is a place where I can truly create and share the things that I love. Working from home I often can spend days, sometimes weeks on a piece. And each time I create something I'm glad to know that it has taken skill, time and effort to make it. It is this feeling that I want to share and pass on to others. And I feel honoured at the thought that people love my work enough to hang it in their home.

My work is inspired by many things; fashion, magazines, feminine beauty and strength and nature. I am also fascinated with our perceptions and idealisation of beauty. I am obsessed with symmetry, geometric patterns and soft floral designs and hair. I work in a variety of media including pencil, watercolour, pastels and digital.

Another major inspiration for me is art nouveau, and the great artists of that time; Mucha, Klimt, Beardsley etc. I love the naturalistic curves and organic lines, the celebration of the female subject and the portrayal of tragedies, love stories and mythical beings. But also I am inspired by the craft and quality that all of these artists showed in their work. Demonstrating skill and passion for their chosen craft.

In my shop I sell a range of mixed media pieces, pencil drawings and prints. I love to use gold and silver paints, which you will often see adorning the women that I love to draw. I also love to paint perfume bottles. I think that they evoke romance and such beauty, the kind that everyone wants to be reminded of.
