PHILOSOPHY
Purple Lamb is about joy--the joy of creating using yarn that lavishes every sense. It’s about color and softness and texture running through your fingers as you create a work of art out of artisan yarn. I find inspiration from nature, art, and especially from classical literature and music.

Everything in my shop is soft enough to wear next to the skin. Soft is my thing. I use merino, silk, alpaca, angora, and a few other really soft fibers so you can make wearable art that you’ll really want to wear.

All products come from a smoke-free but dog-friendly home.

About

How Purple Lamb Got Its Start

I started my shop on Etsy in 2011. It was the natural next step for my love of all things fiber that began when I learned to weave in 2003. I found a wonderful weaving shop and found out for the first (but not the last time) that people who spin and weave are just the nicest people you could ever meet! At pretty much the same time, I decided I wanted to learn to spin too.

At first, I thought it would save money by spinning my own yarn since I knew I wanted to work with all natural fibers. Well, as you probably know, it didn't save money, but it certainly did make it possible for me to take weaving to a whole new level, creating unique items that could never be made from millspun yarn alone.

In the process of learning to spin, I realized that I actually enjoyed it even more than weaving. It's so relaxing, and just so amazing to watch a hunk of fiber slip through your fingers and become a smooth, even-textured yarn or fat, slubby, wild yarn. The variety of what is possible is so much greater with handspun yarn than it is with millspun yarn!

After I'd been spinning pre-dyed roving for awhile, I wanted to learn to dye wonderful colors, and learn I did. It's very rare for me to dye something just one color. I mean, you can BUY yarn that's just one color any old place, but you can't buy handpainted yarn practically anywhere but Etsy.

Next, I wanted fiber animals. You get the idea. I was working my way back one step at a time from finished product to where it all starts. I bought a trio of beautiful French angora rabbits and named them Odysseus, Penelope, and Lily.

More recently, I have started making art batts and hand-painted roving so that I'm not the only one who gets all the fun of spinning!

And most recently of all, I've taken up knitting. I suppose it might seem rather ironic that my latest endeavor is the one most people start with, but I started knitting because I wanted to understand how my customers use my yarn in a way I couldn't without doing it myself. Now I'm really enjoying knitting for its own sake. I especially like the fact that one can knit while sitting in a comfy chair, which isn't the case for weaving. :-)

Thanks for visiting. I hope you find something here that inspires your next project. Feel free to convo me with any questions or comments or ideas or a request for custom work. I'd love to hear from you!

Unless it's a custom order, I will definitely ship within 1-2 business days, but most of the time I ship the morning after you place your order unless it's a custom order.
Additional policies and FAQs
FAQs

What's your customer service philosophy?

I am keenly aware of the fact that without my customers, I don't have a business. I do everything in my power to represent my fiber goodies accurately, to ship quickly, to communicate well, and to just take good care of my customers. It seems to be working as I have a lot of repeat customers.

Do you gift wrap?

I package every order as though it is a gift. My yarn comes packaged in tissue paper, and my art batts come in organza bags. Both are placed in boxes, taped like mad, and shipped to you. Because of this, I don't feel like I need to charge you extra for gift wrapping. It's just part of my service.

I'm buying something from your shop for a friend or family member. Can I include a message?

Of course! Just let me know what you want to say in the note to seller, and I will happily include your note in the package.

Do you do custom work?

I am more than happy to make custom yarn and art batts. You can convo me or send me a photo of something you want me to match. When I'm done making it, I'll post it in my shop as reserved for you, and you should only buy it if you love it. If not, just let me know, and I will make it generally available in my shop.

If I see something in your shop that is sold out, can you make it for me?

The answer is a definite maybe. I do make a lot of things that are repeatable, but some of my items are one of a kind. It depends on whether I can get or make the materials for that item. By all means, send me a convo and ask, and if it can be done, I'm happy to do it.

If I order a skein of your yarn and then come back later to get another skein in the same colorway, will it look the same?

Unless they were dyed in the same batch, the different skeins will likely look like they came from different dye lots. If you let me know that you need more to finish a project, I'll do everything I can to match the yarn as closely as possible, but the best option is to be sure to get as much as you need for the project when you order. If you think you might need more than I have in stock, convo me. If I make all the skeins at once, then you know they will match. If worst comes to worst, though, try to save some of the yarn from the first batch when you realize you don't have enough so you can "fade" it into the second batch.

What is the best way to contact you with questions?

The best way to contact me is here on Etsy using the convo button. I check it multiple times a day. If you try to catch me on social media, it can be hit or miss, but you can definitely find me here.
