Dartmoor is one of England's largest National Parks. It is a huge area of moorland that takes up the majority of the centre of Devon, and is populated by semi-wild sheep, ponies and cattle, among the other wild creatures one would expect to find in South-West England. It is sparsely populated and absolutely stunning.
I live on a farm on South Dartmoor in a hamlet a mile away from the nearest people. There are just two other houses here! All of my creations grow in an old barn that I share with protected rare bats, swallows that fly over from my homeland of Africa, and the pets that love to come tear up my studio! I have no running water or heating - working in winter is definitely a labour of love, especially when gales are battering at my windows and rain blowing in through the air vents in the straw and stone walls. I've lost more than one window to storms, with the force of the wind being enough to literally blow the glass out.
I started the Plutonium Muffins shop when I lost my job as a result of severe anxiety and depression. I love to craft, and it is often the best thing for me when I am having a day that makes it hard to get out of bed. I am now much better in terms of mental health, and working on staying that way!
As a lover of all things craft, I have many different interests and skill-sets. Working on different things helps me keep my focus, which is why I have such varied items for sale! I find cross stitch incredibly calming, but it can also be frustrating when it takes so long to make. Equally, the creative process of playing with different pieces of paper, ink and paint to create cards can be incredibly liberating, but over rather quickly. Spinning and knitting are slower, more organic processes that inspire me to think about human history and how we came to hand crafts as a 'hobby' after the Industrial Revolution.
My family grows a small flock of sheep, both 'regular' and rare-breed. They're all individually named, and I take an active part in caring for them every day. Not only do I get firmly involved in husbandry and mucking out of stables (see 'storms' above...), but I can see them from the windows of the studio. Much of my fibre comes from animals I know personally, or from local hobbyists and farmers who I am friends with. The fibre that does not is ethically sourced, and always British.
The materials that are not fibre-related are mostly recycled. I use pre-loved books that I find in charity shops and thrift stores to create my cards, and the only things I buy in are protective packaging and pristine card stock. I don't use the recycled nature of my products affect the quality of my goods!
Elements of Dartmoor, popular culture, literature and folklore infuse everything I do, and the things I create are the things that I myself love. I do enjoy a good challenge, and custom makes are something that I tackle with abandon.
There are few things better than hiding in a windy studio with a steaming cup of tea, dogs and cat tearing around the floor playing with each other, and creating something that will bring a small taste of this brilliant lifestyle to somebody else.
