About

From Small City to Big Jungle

I grew up in a city which was not renowned for its cultural side. Its creative side also lacked anything much beyond the seascapes and tourist art that the galleries had to offer. But somehow the creative seed was sown from a very young age, and having paired that with my love of nature, the seed sprouted.

In 2009 I went to the Ecuadorian Amazon jungle to do some wildlife research. Being in the jungle was like returning home for me. It felt blissful just to exist. My experiences there have coloured my artwork ever since. From being scared of colour, to vast vibrant jungle scenes, I leaped forward in my art education by studying at Falmouth University on their BA (Hons) Illustration course. Over the course of the 3 years in strangely tropical Falmouth, my love for the jungle grew bigger still. Being on a campus that had a wonderful tropical garden and having multiple garden estates in the area bursting with life and more tropical plants, to the Eden Project... it felt like home away from home. The jungle crept its vines into most of my artwork during my time at university, manifesting in a lot of natural history illustrations for identification guides, and plans of expeditions to Borneo or working with the BBC as a natural history illustrator. These came so close to fruition it hurt! Sadly it wasn't to be. (For now)

I decided to move away from natural history illustration to explore the multitude of other illustrative avenues, and discovered my home in exploring other cultures/traditions/myths/ceremonies and spiritual sides. We all have such different perspectives on everything so it is wonderful to have an infinite amount of universes, each perceived by everyone differently. What a miracle that is!

I graduated from Falmouth in the summer of 2012, and have been traveling, meeting and listening to people and their stories.

My work will continue to grow, and I hope that it will always continue to do so. I will always be an explorer no matter what I decide to explore.

Currently I am exploring other creative practices such as weaving and pottery, as well as my musical side- I play guitar, double bass and I also sing. I love jazz, chinese tea, spiritual books, world music, the wabi-sabi aesthetic and sketchbooking. I obviously love the jungle and hope to return to it next year by working with some shamans in Peru. Look out for news of my travels and sketches on my blog www.stephanieayres.blogspot.com

I love seeing the beauty in the unconventional, drawing inspiration from the 'imperfect' things. I love other cultures and I find stories fascinating, I believe that making something by hand gives it a life of its own. Heartfelt, handmade art, always
