Papercuts inspired by the natural world

My name is Eleanor, and I am a paper artist who loves animals in all their many forms!
Thank you for joining me at Stories In Paper, the home of my original papercut art, prints, paper stationary and other creations :)

Creating intricate artwork has always been a passion of mine, and so when I discovered papercutting in 2010 I fell instantly in love with the medium. I began working with paper art while making shadow puppets of animals for theatre. I realised that I loved the process of cutting away paper to reveal the image inside, and this led me to begin to create detailed papercut images of the natural world.

My creative process always begins with a great deal of research about the animal I want to illustrate. I collect vintage natural history books, so I usually begin by looking through these to find information and inspiration. Because my work is about the natural world I want it to be as accurate as possible, so I will study the ecosystem the animal lives in and what food it eats, as well as making several sketches of the composition and small studies of any specific details I want to include.

I moved from London to the Cumbria 12 years ago after graduating art school so I could explore the beauty and diversity of nature in the Lake District, and my local natural environment is always a huge inspiration in my work.
