The Sea Cat's story

I have always had a deep interest in creating things, however people haven't always encouraged me with it. When I was in school I put a lot of effort into my artwork and although I didn't enjoy studying other people's artwork and doing recreations of other pieces, I never did well with this. My teacher didn't like my work, she made me feel rather discouraged and shy about showing people my work.

When I left school I moved out and got a job, I continued to enjoy making things and had more freedom with creativity and different media. I still didn't have much confidence in what I was doing though and wasn't experimenting with my full potential. After a couple of years at a job in a cafe and going through tough times with illness I decided I wanted to put everything into my art. I moved into a bell tent in an orchard and 'became an artist' my passion was fully sparked at this point to experiment fully. I started working with lots of new media including the world around me, I started using the nature around me not only to inspire me but in my art work. I have always been in love with nature and animals, growing up in the countryside and with parents who work in conservation has fulled my inspiration for a long time now. I started using feathers, leaves, bones, skulls, colours etc in my work therefor bringing an element of my own interests/life to my pieces.

Since then I have lived in various tents, caravans, boats and sheds, this has taught me a lot over the last few years and helped me to grow as a person and an artist, bringing me even closer to nature. Around a year and a half ago I picked up my first embroidery hoop and fell in love with the art, I knew I wanted to make patches and do all of the embroidery by hand because I feel like I have a better feel of the materials and connection to my work. My favorite things to make are embroidery hoops, handmade patches and upcycled clothing, I try and incorporate as many recycled materials as I possibly can. I often take commissions for custom embroidery pieces, pet portraits are probably my favorite but I get asked to do all sorts, so weather you need to brighten up a room with some handmade wall art or give that perfect gift to your friend there is something for everyone. You can keep up with all of my handmade pieces on my website, Facebook page or Instagram, please message me with any ideas for commisions.

I suffer with chronic pain, this affects my life on a day to day basis. I have found that my craft (particularly embroidery) really helps me to manage my pain and in some cases settle it quickly. So being able to make these items has really helped me in my personal life too.

I have this business and I am also a part time model (you can view my portfolio on my website www.theseacat.com) so I get to travel around quite a lot which I enjoy doing, I get itchy feet quickly.

A lot of people ask me where the name 'The Sea Cat' came from and why it doesn't match up with my logo. Well... it does, at least to me it does. When I was young I started calling penguins 'Sea cats', I think because of the way they move in the water, they are sleek and agile like cats. The name fit for many reasons.

Thanks for reading about my artistic journey please like my page to follow me further and see all of my new pieces and shop updates
