I really want this to stay civil and mature.

I really don't know anything about what it represents. I know what I have been told or lead to believe.

If you saw someone with it on their car what is the first thing that pops in your mind?

^M^

It means that they are a redneck.

(No offense meant to anyone, but here, that is what it means.)

I would think they'd watched too many episodes of the Dukes of Hazard. I'm embarrassed to admit that, however. As a history buff I ought to know more about it's purpose/symbolism than that.

on their car? I'd start thinking I was stuck in a horrid 80s TV show...can we say "Dukes of Hazard"?....I'm a Southern girl by birth, but do not think it is classy in any way to display a confederate flag...

There is a huge difference between "Southern" and "Redneck/Hick"...though they both inhabit the same areas...haha

also, i'd think that maybe they don't realise that the civil war is over, and i'd probably think maybe they're a racist.

That I should steer clear. Stay far away.

I live on Long Island and saw someone driving around in a pickup with their entire back windshield done in a Confederate flag. I was, to say the least, astonished.

To me, it signifies ignorance. Someone who glorifies the old days, who might hide behind the guise of states' rights and state pride, but maybe doesn't know the history and what the flag represents.
