My FIL sent an email about this subject. Got me thinking.
Should welfare recipients have to pass a drug test to receive benefits? The premise being that many people who pay taxes are required to pass a drug test to get their job.
Any thoughts?

What a great idea! I definitely think so. I used to work for child support and so much money goes to welfare benefits when noncustodial parents can't pay support. I have also seen the crazy behavior of drug addicts who have custody of kids, so, yes, I think so.

It seems like a logical and fair idea to me...

I would much rather see more effort put into welfare reform and universal health care than I would care about making sure that everyone who recieves welfare is drug tested...and besides...there are ways to pass a drug test and still have drugs in your system.

hmmm...
is drug addiction an illness? yes.
will i then be responsible for rehabilitating said user? probably yes.
will that cost me more of my already overstretched tax dollars? yes.
can i afford that-drug free and responsible hardworking adult that i am-no.
final answer-no.

would love to see it happen, but it won't. I would also like to see a max of 3 years of benefits but that won't happen either. I see too many people who aren't willing to work.
