Does this phase offend anyone else? Another forum in which I'm a member, has a thread with this title. The gist of the OP is that we should seal our borders and basically tell the rest of the world to go screw themselves.

Do none of these so-called patriots not realize that this attitude is the polar opposite of what the United States was built on? The US was founded as a refuge for the persecuted and people who were trying to build a better life.

Yes, I know there are countless things wrong with our nation and it breaks my heart that no one in power seems to want to fix it. But, in my opinion, sealing our borders and refusing entry to those desperate people who want a better life and are willing to work for it is the antithisis of patriotism.

I’m not condoning throwing the “gates” open to any and all, that’s foolish. But we American need to open our hearts to these people and figure out a way to give them the opportunities all of our ancestors had. Remember, unless you’re a Native American, you’re the descendant of an immigrant - regardless of how long ago your ancestors arrived.

If people really want to keep America for "Americans" then we need to all get the heck out of Dodge and let the Native Americans have it back...

Yeah, I know this is going to get ugly, but it kind of pissed me off and made me sad at the same time.

BTW - sorry for the typos. I really should do a better job of proofing better.

I can't wait for TonyO to chime in.

The inscription on the Statue of Liberty reads:

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Well, I do think we should keep open arms, but I think that to receive the benefits of being American, you should have to be one. Or, at least, be in the legal process of becoming one.

Some non-legals have a sense of entitlement that makes me ill.
