The low down on gocco's future...(it's not good news)

Original Post
I spoke to someone from Australia's gocco supplier, Nehoc, the other day & asked lots of questions about what's going on with gocco.
As we know, production of the machines ceased in June - but since so many have been produced, stocks are plentiful, especially from online sellers, ebay, etc.
As for the consumables, Riso is apparently no longer supplying US-based retailers. The supply agreement with the US is totally different to Australia - apparently the machines & consumables supplied to the US were produced specifically for the US market, & Riso doesn't find that profitable anymore.
Luckily for we Australians, our supplies are directly from Japan (the same as those made for the Japanese market) so as long as they're being sold in Japan, they will hopefully be available in Aus too (& Nehoc has stock to last at least the next 5 years).
Unfortunately, even in Japan, the packs of 5 screens are no longer being made (you can only buy packs of 2 screens & 2 bulbs) & many of the ink colours are no longer being made...so you just have to get what you can until the stocks run dry.
As for another manufacturer picking up where Riso left off, apparently the bulbs are the main problem. Only two manufacturers in the entire world make them & they're not cost effective to make unless in massive quantities. There is a (very expensive) machine Riso made to flash the screens, but they no longer make that either! They still make a machine to flash their coarser mesh...nowhere near as fine as the gocco master screens though, so only suitable for cloth, not paper.
So it looks like the American market may run dry of supplies quite soon & US-based people will need to buy online from Japanese sellers. Unfortunately Nehoc doesn't ship to the US.
So very sad...

Well if you own a Gocco print then I'd say you'll be owning a rare piece of work. ♥

I work in a retail store that used to sell goccos...it's true, we can no longer supply them in our stores. First we switched to only selling them online, but now even that option is out. It's so frustrating when customers--especially ones who don't know the backstory--come into our store and can't get what they need. I wish there was a way we could help them. Luckily for me, I never bought one because I had inside info, and I knew the supplies would run out. Still...I wish it were worth it to buy one. There are things you can do with a gocco that you just can't do with a computer. I do block printing, and there are things I can't do with that--like a lot of text--that you can do with a gocco. boo.

I don't think there's anything they can do, since the machine has already been discontinued worldwide & the supplies to the US have dried up. :(

Keeping the thread alive.
Thank you for all that information MagicJelly.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!
Say it isn't true! You are kidding?!
I always thought those bulbs were from some defunct Chinese backwater. They are the flashbulbs from the early 1970s.
I use my gocco everyday... it is such a huge hassle to burn screens traditionally. I had to make a darkroom out of my storage shed.
Man.. we need to start another "save gocco" campaign.

And I just screwed up 3 screens the other day. Now I am scared to use it since my stockpile is only a few hundred screens and 50 bulb packs

The site design is pretty bad isn't it? Placing an order isn't the easiest, but I've had nothing but good service from them.
