CONDITION: This piece is all hand sewn from recycled clothing or quilt scraps with raw edged applique and may show fraying. There is one piece that has some machine stitching on it from a shirt I had in the 80s to 90s, but even that piece has been stitched on to the background. All the pieces have been hand cut and hand stitched, no pattern has been used and most of the fabric scraps have been recycled from my clothes, quilts or boro. None of the edges have been turned. More details below.
SIZE: approximately: about 5.75 inches by 4. The background was a found piece with the corner cut. See photos with rulers on ZOOM.
You will receive patch #2, even snails reach for the stars with the snail and flower, as seen in the photos 1 and 3.
MATERIALS: Background is from an old pair of plaid seersucker overalls from the 80s. The flower, snail and snail shell are from boro and the added piece in the corner is vintage quilt scrap and got doubled by accident. The green flower stem is the piece that's from an old vintage shirt from my teaching days and is the piece with the machine stitching on it. Black and orange vintage cotton thread and new neon yellow thread have been used for the stitching.
DOMESTIC SHIPPING: will arrived folded and includes support, if needed and USPS first class shipping with tracking and insurance. OTHER DETAILS: "Even snails reach for the stars" is a reminder that even if all I can do is work at a snail's pace, I'm still moving! This piece has been inspired by a book by Misao Wada, who was a student of Ayako Miyawaki. I've been a fan of Ayako Miywaki's work since the late 90s and now I'm a fan of Misao Wada!
ABOUT AYAKO MIYAWAKI: In 1945 (basically at the end of WW2), at the age of 40, she began in an outburst of spontaneity and vitality to produce applique works out of rags, a material which she found in her everyday life. My mom gave me her book after she saw my quilt blocks from my Inner City Alphabet Quilt. I had two, Ayako Miyawaki's books from 1991 and put one for sale at this shop, it has since sold. I shared more of the unseen photos from the book on my Hoarder Rehab blog, link below:
