Behavior incentive charts are huge motivators for most children. Positive reinforcement can make households far less stressful, for both caregivers and their children.

Each time the child cooperates in each task/behavior, they receive a checkmark/sticker/smiley face. You may even choose to laminate your chart, and use a dry erase marker to draw smiley faces or checkmarks. Once they reach their goal, they receive a predetermined reward and lots of praise!

Always reinforce why your child is receiving the point: "I like how you ...., so I'm giving you a checkmark!" Remember to be specific in your praise. Instead of saying that you like how they used their manners, tell them that you liked how they said "Please". Your child will know exactly why you are so proud of them, and will be encouraged to repeat the behavior!

Place the chart where it will be noticed each day. If you are working on potty training, place it in the bathroom (see my blog for potty training tips).

You may choose to start by requiring only two points. Then, four points, and so on. Build up until they meet your expectations. Don't expect perfection. As parents and caregivers, we're not perfect either!

Be consistent. Give the point faithfully. Rewarding one day and not the next will result in your child losing faith in the system, and the behavior will not improve. Charts should be used for six weeks in order to establish a positive behavior.
