This hand painted wooden Christmas ornament features a train or, more accurately, the steam engine. Although locomotives were built as early as 1804, it was not until 1829 that the steam locomotive really won recognition and became firmly established. It was at that time that the "Rocket", one of Robert Stevenson's locomotives, won a contest on the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The "Rocket" weighed about 4 1/4 tons and had a maximum speed of 30 miles an hour.
