The Piping Plover is a small sparrow-sized shorebird that nests and feeds along coastal sand and gravel beaches in North America. This Plover is globally threatened and endangered. In the 19th century and early 20th century the Piping Plover was utilized for its feathers as decoration in women's hats, which led to its initial population decline. The second decline in the Piping Plover's population has been been attributed to shoreline stabilization efforts, habitat loss due to increased development and human activity near nesting sites in the decades following World War II. Critical nesting habitats are now being protected to help the population during its breeding season, but the species remains in serious danger.
Photo #5-6 are snowy plovers. Please message me if you are interested in a different plover than the Piping Plover.
My Plovers have been needle felted, a time consuming process in which wool roving is repeatedly poked by a barbed needle, until the desired shape is formed. The adult is life size at approximately 6.5 inches in length and stands on sturdy wire feet which are covered also in wool. The eyes are made of glass.
