The Strawberry Roan
From PistolesPress
This limited edition of woodblock prints is entitled "The Strawberry Roan" because his dappled scale pattern reminds me of strawberry seeds. The prints were hand pulled in the moku hanga style of block printing on Kozo paper. A total of 5 blocks were carved for this print and the design was taken from an original sketch that I did for a beastiary book collaborative. There are two bokashi (gradations) apparent in the salmon colored skin and blood colored scales. The red hues were mixed from Gamblin powdered pigment combinations of Cadmium, Prussian Blue, and Indian Red. The green tinged mane and tail are ground from imported japanese vegetable pigments used in moku hanga from Woodlike Matsumara. The kozo itself measures 10 7/8" X 6 1/2" but the image area measures roughly 8 1/2" X 5". The Kirin or Quilin is a mythical benevolent being said to appear only in rare times of true peace and justice in China. I enjoy rendering Quilin to bring me inner peace. Please note the edition number in the left hand corner of the image. Because this edition is small, I will be loading images of each print as they sell. The image that you see at the bottom of this listing will be the image that you will receive as your purchase. Print edition number is 13/27.
