Behavior incentive charts are proven and effective tools for eliciting positive behavioral changes in children. Children replace undesirable behaviors with positive habits. With your continued praise and encouragement, and their continued success towards their goals, your child's self esteem will flourish!
WHAT CAN YOU USE THIS CHART FOR?
Activities at Home: Staying in bed all night, getting ready for school, cleaning their room, eating healthy meals, hygiene, potty training, chores, etc.
Educational Activities: Completing homework, learning multiplication tables, learning sight words, getting a project completed, etc.
Encourage Positive Behavior: Teach your children to use kind hands, use a quiet voice, tell the truth, ask politely, use their words instead of hitting or kicking, share with siblings/friends, do as asked the first time, etc.
HOW DOES THE CHART WORK?
This behavior chart can be used for multiple goals. Each time the child cooperates in each task/behavior, they receive points which will get them to their predetermined reward. My own son gets a special treat after four points each day, and at the end of the week with fifteen points, he gets pizza!
You can either write the goals (my son has learned to read this way, as we review the goals each day) or you can draw little pictures to represent the goals (don't worry about being an artist, as kids learn very quickly what each picture represents). Use a dry erase marker to write goals and record points.
SOME TIPS:
1. CHOOSE SPECIFIC, MEASURABLE GOALS THAT ARE APPROPRIATE FOR THE AGE AND DEVELOPMENTAL LEVEL OF YOUR CHILD.
+ Make your bed.
+ Eat your supper (e.g eat 10 bites of your supper).
+ Share your toys with your brothers.
+ Get out of bed for school when your alarm sounds.
+ Go pee on the potty (or, simply, sit on the potty for 1 minute).
+ You could use this chart to help youngsters complete their morning, bathroom, or bedtime routines (eg. get out of bed, get dressed, brush teeth, etc).
+ You can even break one goal into different subgoals. "Tidy Room" can be the overall goal, but your child earns a point for: toys in chest, books on shelf, clothes in the hamper, clean clothes in dresser or closet, make bed).
+ The chart is flexible; adjust the difficulty to the individual needs of your child.
2. PLACE THE CHART WHERE IT WILL BE NOTICED EACH DAY. This will be a visible reminder about what they are working towards. If you are working on potty training, place it in the bathroom (see my blog for potty training tips - www.tagalongadventure.blogspot.com). If your are focusing on having them keep their room tidy, as in above example, keep the chart in their bedroom.
3. SUCCESS IS THE KEY. Start easy. You may choose to start by requiring only two points. Then, four points, and so on. Allowing them success early on will help motivate them to continue. Build up until they meet your expectations. Still, don't expect perfection. As parents and caregivers, we're not perfect either!
4. BE CONSISTENT. Give the point faithfully. Rewarding one day and not the next will result in your child losing faith in the system, and the behavior will not improve. For the same reason, I also recommend that parents do not take away checkmarks for "bad" behavior - just remind them that they don't get a checkmark this time, but they will have another opportunity later. Charts should be used for six weeks in order to establish a positive behavior.
5. PICK A CHART THAT MATCHES YOUR CHILD'S INTERESTS. Children are motivated when charts are made "just for them". You may want to consider changing the chart theme every so often in order to maintain the excitement!
6. PRAISE, PRAISE, PRAISE. Be specific with your praise when you give the checkmark. "I really like how you shared with your sister. Good job!" Make sure they know what makes you proud, and what will earn them checkmarks towards their reward!
7. BE FLEXIBLE. If the chart doesn't seem to be working, rethink the goals that you have set and ensure they are relevant to your child's developmental level and age. I also suggest that you rule out medical concerns that may be influencing your child's behavior. For example, when was your child's last hearing evaluation?
Eventually, your child will no longer require the highly motivating extrinsic reward that you offer initially with the reward chart. Instead, your child will be rewarded because they feel good about their own behavior or because they achieved a desired goal!

Print your chart at home or at your favorite Printer's! Consider laminating or putting the chart in a plastic sheet protector (available in the office supply section of stores) for extra durability. Attach magnets to your laminated chart for use on your fridge, or pin to a bulletin board, and use a dry erase marker to record goals and check off accomplished tasks.
