Joan Kaiser began sewing at the age of nine using her mother’s Singer 301. Making dresses for 4-H competition and clothes for her Barbie dolls became a lifelong passion for fabric construction. Joan sewed most of her own clothes in college and has made many custom draperies. She discovered quilting eighteen years ago while pregnant with her second daughter. In the past eighteen years, Joan has made over fifty quilts and wallhangings and has plans and a stash for 258 more. Her work ranges from traditional to contemporary to art quilts.
Having created and appreciated art for many years, Joan studied art and architecture for two years in college before deciding on a business degree. She has taken various quilting classes and participated in Ruth B. McDowell’s “Designing from Nature” workshop in Kalispell, Montana, and Paula Nadelstern's "Through a Quilted Kaleidoscope" course. Joan believes great quilt design requires a balance of the rules of color and style tempered with emotional response. She is currently writing her first quilting book.
Joan lives in Plano, Texas, with her husband Jeff. While not making quilts, Joan works full-time as an IT Project Manager. That old Singer 301 is still her favorite machine.
