Mission: The mission of Surfing Yogis USA is to support the development of ecologically and socially responsible surf and stand-up paddle tourism in India.
Who We Are Surfing Yogis USA is a global tribe of surfers and yogis who wish to promote the sports of surfing and stand-up paddle (SUP). Grounded in the ethics of classical yoga philosophy we seek to promote environmental awareness by using surfing and SUP as tools to educate individuals about the interconnectedness, fragility and beauty of life and the important ecological systems on the planet. Our current mission is focused in India, a developing country in need of much assistance in this age of globalization and environmental degradation.
What We Do Given its stage of economic development and its thousands of miles of unexplored coastline, rivers, lagoons and marshes waiting to be discovered for enthusiasts worldwide, India offers plenty of opportunity for the expansion of the sports of surfing and stand-up paddle (SUP). The country also possesses all of the natural resources necessary for the sustainable domestic production of surf and SUP equipment. Due to its status as a developing nation, its bustling population, and the need for enhanced economic wellbeing, the development of sustainable surf tourism and domestic board production presents a lucrative opportunity for India’s coastal population. In order to make this a reality, however, the local villages need financial assistance to acquire the knowledge necessary for eco-friendly board production as well as to be able to develop the infrastructure to establish permanent board-producing facilities.
Surfing Yogis USA seeks to fund micro projects throughout India to fulfill its mission to “support the development of ecologically and socially responsible surf and stand-up paddle tourism in India”. “Ecologically responsible” means that surf boards will be made from local, sustainable, and natural resources, namely bamboo, with little to no waste. This will eliminate the need to use polymer-based synthetic substances that are harmful to the environment and the people crafting boards. It also implies that surf and SUP tourism will be used in each locality as a means to educate tourists and locals alike about the ecosystems in which surfing and SUP activities are taking place, such as India’s ocean, lakes, rivers, marshes, etc. By “socially responsible”, we mean to say that we will support the development of the necessary infrastructure by which surf and SUP boards may be produced by the villagers of each surfing and SUP location while also providing villagers with the necessary training to learn how to shape these boards. This will provide economic opportunity for coastal villages to enhance their quality of life in the developing third world nation of India.
