Once upon a time... My career in making skin care began when as an enterprising 11 year old I crushed some pretty coloured rocks, combined them with vaseline and tried unsuccessfully to sell as ‘lipstick’ to my mother.... Fifteen years passed, and life, as it has a tendency to do, was not following my best laid plans. I was working in my architectural design business when my health became quite poor. Unable to even care for myself, I spent many months on the living room floor at my parents’ house staring at the ceiling, too exhausted to move. As time went by it became apparent that this was a long term state of affairs, and that I would need a project to work on to keep me sane during the long months ahead. My skin had become very dry and sensitive and as it was difficult to find a moisturizer that I didn’t need to apply twice daily, I set out to make my own. My bedroom soon became a library; I would be propped up in bed with unwieldy tomes stacked up around me, avidly reading the histories of various plants and their medicinal properties. I would spend hours when I had the energy, trying different recipes using plant oils, floral waters and botanical extracts that were renowned for their ability to soothe and hydrate the skin. After reading that our skins can absorb up to 60% of what we put on them, I wanted the recipe to be almost edible; so no parabens, sulphates, artificial colours or fragrances were included. I researched essential oils and began crafting my own fragrances to add to the creams, and the results were very satisfying. I knew exactly what my skin was drinking in, and found that my creams were keeping my sensitive skin soft and supple. My friends began commenting on my skin and would ask for samples. Their heart warming response after trying them was, “You should sell these!” I had loved the process of researching and creating the creams, and I began to think, “Why not?” My design background proved useful as I started sketching countless pretty patterns and selecting the colours for the packaging. I printed out boxes and I cut, I scored, I glued. I made batches of cream, labelled them and lovingly packed them in their little cartons. And here they are....
