For Christmas 2010, I received my first spinning wheel. My husband gave it to me because he knew I loved to knit. I must say I was intimidated at first. Honestly, I thought the wheel was more likely to become an expensive piece of home decor. To my utter delight, learning to spin and dye yarn came quickly. I found myself practicing every day. The kitchen transformed into a dye studio within three short months. The spinning wheel was the best gift my husband had ever given me. Ever so often he'll look at me (while I'm spinning) and say, "I never thought this wheel would be the catalyst for what you're doing with your yarn and fiber business."
Since January 2011, I've been experimenting, failing, and succeeding in designing bold, different, and just plain fabulous yarn!
Now my mission is to spread the joy of using high-quality, handmade yarn and spinning fiber as the medium for YOUR next project of love. Let's face it, crafters and artists are phenomenal people who work with their hands to show their heart. Now its time to take the work I've done and turn it into the work that you do. I can't wait to become Your Stash Supplier!

Green Practices:

In my work with fiber I have some preferences that perhaps make it a little easier and sometimes a little more difficult to produce dyed yarn or roving. Here's a list of things I like to do on a regular basis:

1. Re-use vinegar/water soak for bare roving and yarns.
2. Re-use exhausted dye bath water multiple times (which helps to lessen the heavy metal content of the water when it goes down the drain).
3. Re-use my latex gloves until there's a hole in one of them.
4. I completely avoid the use of plastic wrap or really any plastic product in the process of dyeing.
5. I don't own a microwave so I never use them as a heat source for my yarn or spinning fiber.
6. Re-use large jars for preparing dye, storing dye, and heat-setting fiber. I use Freecycle to ask for additional jars and lids.
7. Cloth towels and rags are used in the place of paper towels.
8. Dyed fiber is hung to try indoors during the winter and outdoors in the hot Texas summer. Yeehaw.
9. The label for my yarns and spinning fiber is my business card.
10. Instead of laying newspaper down, I just use freezer paper over and over and over again.
