About

I grew up in a family of artists and musicians, and while my interests have ranged far and wide, textiles, fibres, and colour have always had a special place for me.

Sewing, knitting, weaving tapestries and cloth, spinning, and making paper make me really happy, and if I could spend all my time doing nothing but ... well, life would be a particular kind of wonderful.

I love the way a ball of yarn can take on such different forms when left to different hands and the individual creativity we all carry within; I love the accidental colours that can turn up in the dye pot and the springy sponginess of fleece coming off handcards, and I celebrate the potential of every skein that comes off my wheel and goes out into the world.

I'm interested in dyeing and spinning colours I wish I could find in stores using fibres that are a joy to touch. I love experimenting with what wool can do, but I find plant fibres really exciting too and like the contrast of colour and texture, and how my handcards can put them together into something wonderful.

My family is originally from the Faroe Islands – a tiny, hauntingly beautiful place with more sheep than people – and I weave on my grandmother's loom. Her threads still tie back the extra heddles and mark the centre of the reeds, and I think of her while I weave, how difficult it must have been for her to leave her home, her family, her language, and come to Canada, and how she would laugh to see what I'm doing with her loom.

As well as the above, I'm a mother, wife, writer, court reporter, proofreader, editor. I grew up in Nova Scotia and dream about one day going back to the rocky shores and foggy mornings.
