Hello!
My name is Kay.
I make hats.
I sew, I knit, and I crochet. I design most of my own patterns, but I do also use patterns that I’ve found or purchased, often altering them to make them my own.
I am particularly drawn to cloche style hats from the 1920s and 30s. What is appealing to me about cloche style hats is how they hang low over the ears and low over the forehead, which is how I style my hats. The 1920s and 30s also used a lot of embellishments: roses, flowers, lace, buckles, buttons, knots, and other decorative items, even birds and feathers. The cloche style hat can sometimes have a very loose slouchy look, or sometimes have a very tight neat look. There is so much you can do with these few qualities.
WHY HATS?
I believe in warmth. Every day should be as warm and comforting as snuggling up in front of a fire. Pull on a hat and you will feel that snuggly warmth!
I believe in hats. Everyone wears many different hats in life, figuratively speaking. Why shouldn’t we also have a different hat to match our every mood, to match our every role, or at least to match our every coat! No one should own just one hat.
I believe in fashion. Every style there ever was will always cycle around again, in its own way. Looking at hat fashion over the centuries is quite amazing!
I believe you should always walk out the door looking pulled together. On the days I don’t feel like doing my hair, a hat can do just that!
I believe in the circle of recycling. Old or used materials can become new again and be very chic. The majority of the materials I use are from old or used items, scraps, or throwaways.
WHY KAY-KAY'S BIRD CLUB?
I love hand-made items. Nothing you buy that was manufactured will ever look as cute, nor feel as special, and a hand-made item. I like to think I’m a part of the movement that supports wearing clothing that has not been grossly manufactured. Hand-made items also have a unique quality. Many hand-made items are one-of-a-kind. How cool is that to own an item that no one else owns!
I love working with a variety of materials. I am drawn to soft and snuggly fabrics and yarns, and anything that will keep you warm.
What is special about my hats is their adjustability.
I design many of my hats with open slits in the back (so it can be worn open or closed), and tie cords (so you can tie it looser or tighter), so the hat can be worn by a variety of head sizes. This also allows you to have a different look on different days. Through the open slits you can hang out your bun or ponytail. Or you can tie them looser if you want to wear your hair long and full of body. Or you can pull it tight if you want to tie all your hair up inside. If the hat design does not have open slits, I ensure the fabric is stretchable enough to accommodate adjustability.
I am very excited to open up an Etsy shop. I started making hats because I have a really small head. Hats I find in stores are always too big on me, so I had to start making my own so they would fit right. This also has inspired me to make my hats adjustable so that they aren't just one size.
In the end, this hobby has given me great-looking hats for myself, or to give away to friends and family. The idea of reaching out to the public with a storefront is very new and exciting for me.
It’d be great if you check back often!
