Homegrown Jewelry: Planting and working with Job's tears

Job’s Tears is an ornamental grass that produces seeds in the shape of a teardrop. The Latin name for this plant is Coix lacryma-jobi. I have been growing these beads in my backyard in Marietta, Georgia for about twenty years now. Depending on drought conditions, they grow anywhere from four feet to six feet tall. They really do look like small corn stalks.

I harvest the beads beginning in late July through September. At harvest time, I pick the seeds that are hard and glossy and bring them in and spread them out on a plate for several weeks. I then sit down with a hat pin and splinter tweezers and pull the tiny little husk out of each bead. Sometimes I will use an emery board to smooth the top rough edge if it needs it. When the husk comes out, it leaves a hole all the way through the bead, making it nature’s perfect bead. This process is time-consuming, but they are hard to put down once I start playing with them.

These pretty beads come in all shades of gray and sometimes brown. Some have stripes and some don’t. Some are white. It seems that each bead I pick up is unique and special.

I pair my beads with gemstones, nut beads and other beads that catch my eye. Some of my jewelry items do not have the Job' Tears as I choose to leave them out of some my creations.
