You are what you read...

Although I have always been an insatiable bookworm, it was becoming a mother that set me on the path that led to the creation of my Etsy bookshop.

There is something magical about the melding of illustration and text that happens in a well-done picture book, an alchemy of creativity and imagination that brings stories to unforgettable life. That magic is what captivated and enthralled me as a child, and that is what I wanted to offer to my own daughter. You are what you read, and I wanted to nourish her soul with nothing but the best, just as I nourish her growing body with healthy, tasty foods.

As I sought to introduce my little one to the joy of reading, I found myself becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the options I found. Too many insipid cookie cutter stories, too few original, hand-done illustrations, too many commercially motivated offerings, and too little creativity. I did discover some wonderful new gems, but I found myself longing for the quirky, colorful creations I enjoyed during my own childhood.

Fortunately, no time machine was required for a trip to vintage book heaven. I found a treasure trove of awesome vintage kids books at used bookstores, estate sales, thrift shops and library book sales. Initially they all were added to our ever growing home library (check it out at Librarything, my member name is sunnybrookgal) but over time I sought an outlet to share the bounty with others. Then a friend introduced me to Etsy and I knew I had found a perfect solution for my overflowing bookshelves.

I love that Etsy focuses on offering unique, quality items that will last a lifetime. It is a refreshing departure from the shoddy, short-lived products that dominate mainstream megamarts. Like the other fine vintage and handcrafted items sold on Etsy, my vintage books are an investment in quality. They are not throwaway commercial tie-ins that lose their appeal with changing trends. Once Upon a Bookshop books are solid, nourishing treasures that will feed your child's brain, engage their imagination and instill a lifelong appreciation for the beauty of language and visual art. They are books to delve into, to discuss, and to dissect. Use them as springboards to expand vocabulary, explore new cultures and ideas, and examine artistic styles, themes and materials.

Books offer children a window for exploring not only their world, but themselves. Children are voraciously hungry to learn. Feed them wisely.
