Hutan Tulang was created to supply unique jewellery inspired by the tribal styles of indigenous people. Though our favoured material is bone, many of our other materials come from all over South East Asia, from the Akha hill tribe of Thailand to former nomadic hunter gatherers such as the Orang Asli of peninsular Malaysia and the Penan of Sarawak. Through purchasing beads and other jewellery parts from them we help support their survival in the encroaching capitalist world. Through selling our own jewellery we hope to spread awareness of the plight of these indigenous people and their ancient cultures.

Additional policies and FAQs

FAQ:
1. Where are your bones from?
We gather bones from a variety of sources, and all are by-products of the pet, farming and pest-control industries. No animals have ever been killed for the making of this jewellery! We are simply recycling what would usually be thrown away.
2. Why are some pieces so much more expensive than others?
Our materials come from many different places, some are older and more difficult to find than others. The most expensive pieces will usually not only have taken a lot more work to create but may also contain antique materials that are both extremely old and no longer exist in large quantities. That means they're unique and you'll not likely see anything like them again.
3. Why won't you ship some pieces to Australia?
Having lived in Australia we're highly familiar with their quarantine laws which restrict the import of seeds. Even though these beads are purely ornamental these laws are still based upon the assumption that all seeds are imported for cultivation (a little bit ridiculous considering they can easily use radiation to render the seeds useless for such purposes, but we needn't get into that!). As a result we won't risk sending jewellery containing any seed materials into Australia since they would most likely end up meeting an unfortunate end in the incinerator.
