I started knitting and crocheting in the summer of 2008. It was eight years later though, after dreams of going to college fell through, that I knew that I wanted to turn my passion for yarn-crafting into a full-time career.

I never envisioned it turning out this way. The first thing I ever knitted was a lumpy practice piece in variegated purple acrylic that I got from a thrift store. The next, an ugly, bright green purse, with pink beads and a huge, plastic, white shank button hanging by a strand of yarn. (Not even gonna lie, it was ugly.) Knitting was a hobby for the next eight years, with an occasional commission for a friend. I'd entertained the thought of opening an Etsy shop, but it just never really took root, until the summer of 2016.

In 2013, just after I had made plans of going to nursing school, I was hit by NDPH, a rare, treatment-resistant subform of chronic headache, and chronic migraine on top of it. I realized very soon that until it was manageable and under control, I wouldn't be able to hold a job or start working on a degree.

I had my faith which I clung to, and I had knitting. I thank the Lord that I had knitting. Those are my two constants. Knitting became a lovely distraction during the hours in a dark room with a migraine. It became a way to occupy my hands, which would otherwise be shaking. The yarn was soft and soothing, the click of the needles was calming. The ability to focus on a project instead of my circumstances was much-needed. And finishing a project gave me a sense of having been productive, even though I'd unwillingly spent the day bedridden.

It dawned on me in June of 2016 that I really could make a career out of this. This could be my answer. This could be a source of income, yet something I was passionate about doing. Maybe just as much as I had been about nursing.

Selling items by word of mouth and taking on commission work (and falling in love with my now husband, who supported me every step of the way) filled the time while I was also building up an inventory of handmade items and designing my own patterns over the summer of 2016. I prepared all summer for the shop launch!

More importantly though, I prayed. For "Unless the Lord builds the house, those who build it labor in vain." My Father in Heaven has brought me this far, and laid everything in place. I'm trusting God to lead and guide through this career process, and praying that through it, I can bring honor and glory to Him.

As of 2022, I am both headache and headache medication free. I still choose knitting, dyeing, and yarn and roving as my career!

Knitting is my hobby, solace, and God-given passion. The clicking of the needles is music to my soul.

In 2019, I began vending at Fiber Festivals! You can now find KnitzAndPearls in any Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin Fiber Fests that will have me!
