Herbariums as art
I created my first herbarium many moons ago, as part of my job working for the Forest Service in Alaska. Over the next decade I collected and curated many more plants to create teaching collections. I discovered it was helpful to create prints of the collections because the original specimens didn't hold up well to being handled repeatedly.
Now I create herbariums because I love the beauty of the plants on paper! I work out of my home studio near Whitefish, Montana. Most of the plants I have collected from the forests of northwest Montana, but some are from travels and previous places I have lived and worked in the western states. Some I have cultivated from seed.
The process of creating a finished print has many steps. Everything from pressing to printing is done in house. A recent addition to my studio is a professional large format inkjet printer. I personally create every print, from start to finish. I put my heart and soul into each and every one. I hope you enjoy the work!
