Using a combination of glazes and the warmth of raw clay to express a variety of textures, each piece is individually handmade, so that it has its own unique personality. Often, Nancy’s work stops at a point when a standard clay shape begins to transform into another form, such as a cubic shape begins to resemble an animal (as seen in the dog and cat jars pictured here ). This allows the piece to suggest both the subject (the animal) and the process (the change of the initial shape).
With the inspiration from animals in nature, Nancy feels her stoneware animal pieces each have a soul of their own -- beginning from their conception deep in her own soul through the tempering in the fires of the kiln.
