Announcement    We are now selling slate shapes handmade from Peach Bottom Slate from Delta, PA. They are great decor, great for painting, chalkboards, cheeseboards and make awesome gifts! Please read more about them below!

Custom listings are always our pleasure, keep in mind we also have regular shingle sized or smaller rectangular or square pieces of slate!

---*The Story of the Slate Splitting Mallet*---

The famous Peach Bottom slate was split using a special splitting chisel and wooden mallets, similar to those here (but larger). Slate is still split the same way today using the same basic tools. Splitting Mallets were made of hickory or oak. Iron rings were added to the mallet head to keep the wood from cracking and to add needed weight. The wooden mallet striking a metal chisel would provide a softer blow to thin and brittle roofing slate.

Feedback from one of our many satisfied customers:

"LOVE them! Sure to be split between our kids one day as family heirlooms. Almost a work of art - but ready to get dirty on some crabs. Shipping was fast and items were packed well. Very happy with my purchase!"

~Peach Bottom Slate~

First used in 1734, the first native slate used in America. Used mainly as a roofing material. Peach Bottom slate was judged the best in the world at the London Crystal Palace Exposition in 1851. It was formed during the Ordovician geological period, 500 million years ago.

The roofs of the Biltmore Estate in North Carolina, the Astor residence in New York, buildings at Johns Hopkins University and the Pennsylvania State Capitol are all of Peach Bottom slate.

-These pieces of slate come from Delta, York County, Pennsylvania-
