The Sting--Original Mixed Media Painting

Description

An elegant, colorful, tarnished, well-worn melange of old and new. I find jellyfish to be so achingly gorgeous and haunting, but I am gobsmacked scared to death of them. When others fear the dorsal fin of a large shark while snorkeling in tropic waters, I myself am constantly on the lookout for these nearly invisible little critters that haplessly float by--they are truly ghosts of the sea.

I had so much fun creating this piece! The base is an antique 1800s bookcover (from a photographer's studio) that I've held onto for many months as a little piece of inspiration. It's truly incredible. Worn, a little hagged, and tarnished, it's made of embossed leather covered board and has beautifully pitted brass buckles. The reverse is covered in a splendid gilded patterned paper that is part of the original cover. I left it all as-is.

The centerpiece is of course, a quiet and colorful little jellyfish done in artist-grade acrylics on found paper by yours truly. His dome is the only portion that is given a high-gloss varnish, making him look eerily realistic and wet. Placed in a red painted pine wood frame and surrounded in vintage tea-stained lace.

All hung up by lovely aqua satin ribbon and fully ready to hang off your wall. Signed/dated on the back, this is a one-of-a-kind treasure.

Measurements: painting is approx. 1.5x2", book cover is approx. 6x5", hang length (from top of ribbon to bottom of book) is approx. 10"
